As a starting point, please consider the following questions:

Have you achieved prolonged** success from one or more diet plan/s, and if so, approximately how long did you enjoy that success for?

What are your reasons for wanting/needing to diet?

**prolonged success being more than one year.
It’s that time of year when many of us think about improving our health and wellbeing. Shedding the Christmas excess and starting or getting back on the diet is at the top of many people’s ‘To Do’ list.

January can be a great motivator to get back in shape and never has the diet industry been busier than the start of a new year, even though it might mean the dreaded ‘getting back to it’ mentality. Stepping back on the scales, encouraging a heightened state of vigilance, reducing portion size, calorie counting, all of which can trigger feelings of frustration, deprivation and ironically a need to place your focus on food, which can make it difficult to resist.

There is a place for diet clubs as they can kickstart motivation, focus and, being part of a community can be fun and inspirational. Although, it's proven that, for the majority, diets are only effective while ‘sticking to the plan’ and most will be familiar with "but haven’t I been here before?" or "here we go again!". Looking good can bring many benefits. Feeling more attractive means greater confidence and an overall sense of wellbeing but what if, rather than seeking out the ideal life that looks good you built a life that looks and feels good?

The UnDiet Your Life Programme doesn’t include weighing scales, tracking apps, low calorie soups or sachets. Instead, it places the focus on unlearning the outdated information stored in the ‘diet brain’ and re-learning that your worth and value doesn’t have to be dictated by the size of your body shape but on the shape of the thoughts and beliefs that the diet industry have embedded in to the minds of many for so long.

The diet mentality isn’t usually about losing weight to improve health, it’s almost always about being slimmer, thinner, looking better and therefore feeling better. Most dieters place their focus on the bits that aren’t ‘slim enough’/’good enough’ e.g., tops of arms, tummy, hips, bottom, thighs, or a combination of all of these. Anything that contributes to the belief that our body needs to look a specific way is a diet mentality.

The perpetual diet culture is unrelenting in its quest to find the elusive ‘wish fulfilled’, as the dieter attempts the same old diet, another diet, or the latest diet. I’m not aware of anyone whose attained their ‘goal weight’ and achieved lasting success after investing in just the one weight loss programme, plan, or diet.

Dieting places the emphasis on numbers on the scales and anticipated results, without a thought to the pressure it places on both the physical and mental health of the dieter. The diet culture is harmful and affects all body types, shapes, and sizes. It promotes a view that being thin is favourable and being fat is shameful.
The diet culture also places it’s focus on the very problem it claims it can solve i.e., permanent weight loss. However, the underlying emphasis around food and the size and shape of your body is damaging and regularly leaves the dieter feeling disappointed, disempowered, frustrated and a ‘failure’ when they don’t succeed. This reinforces feelings of shame, low confidence, poor self-esteem and/or self-worth.

The compulsion to look a certain way to feel ‘good enough’ is what keeps the diet culture alive. Social media makes us hyper aware of the world around us. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc are saturated with air brushed/filtered images of the ‘ideal body’ and is responsible for determining whether you feel body positive, or body shamed. This can lead to obsessive, emotional, or disordered eating by trying to shrink your body to fit in with the slim/thin culture.
Looking and feeling good in your skin can bring many benefits to your life. Feeling more attractive encourages greater confidence, both being favourable assets that invite a sense of fulfilment and wellbeing.

I’m not suggesting that diet clubs aren’t helpful, they do have a place in society by promoting and encouraging a sense of community, focussing on healthy eating, portion control and offering flexibility. However, any success achieved is usually diminished quite soon after because of the entrenched behavioural ‘autopilot’ response patterns in the subconscious around dieting and food, not being addressed.

By cutting through the ‘stuck record’ mentality of the negative belief system that tells you “I need to stick with the diet, lose weight and then I will feel good about myself”, will allow you to claim the power back over your body.

The benefits of feeling good about yourself without the hostility that dieting creates are both bountiful and beautiful.
